What do you do if your PS3 wifi reception is poor
By malco
Ok, so the story is, I wanted a room away from the house to watch movies/play games, so converted the workshop.
Bought a PS3, because it had a build in blue ray player and had a hdmi output. Neat!
And PS3 would allow you to connect to Internet and use cool stuff like iPlayer, Deezer etc.
..but it needs an internet connection, and although the PS3 supports wifi, it does not seem to be that good.
So after doing a bit of research, I tried some of the suggestions, like turn PS3 on its side (like a book) as the aerial device is better oriented that way.....no good!
'If you want to improve the wi-fi reception of your PS3, stand your PS3 on it's left side. The wi-fi antenna is located on the right side of your PS3, so standing it up this way gets the antenna higher up and less blocked than other possible configurations. For me, this placement helped improve the signal strength.'
Basically I was too far away from my wifi router, although my cheap and cheerful Asus mini laptop seemed Ok.
So the idea I used was to purchase a box of tricks (or two boxes) that allows you to use your electricity supply to carry network signals.
Lots of people sell this ...just google 'network over mains' to find who is selling it.
The one I chose went up to 100Mbps (which was slightly more expensive) as I did not want to take a chance, as I wanted to stream movies.
I must admit I did panic when it arrived, as it had a driver CD in the box ....doh! had I made a
huge mistake? i.e. would a PS3 accept a 3rd party driver. (unlikely!)
Fortunately it didn't need the driver. You just plug one box in near your wifi router, and connect in Ethernet cable, and then a second box near your PS3, and connect in cable from this to PS3. (It came supplied with necessary short Ethernet cables)
Anyway problem solved.
